INAUGURAL CATHAY YOUTH 7's INVITATIONAL A ROARING SUCCESS

PUBLISHED ON 03 APR 2025

Hong Kong China Rugby is pleased to report the Cathay Youth 7s Invitational launched to great success over ‘rugby week’, providing a platform for future stars of the game to get a taste of tournament life. Gathering top teams from schools across the globe, this exciting new showcase gives players the chance to compete at the spiritual home of rugby sevens, right alongside the main tournament. Generously supported by Cathay, led by one of Hong Kong China’s finest sevens stars Jamie Hood, and delivered by the Hong Kong China Rugby community team, the future of this tournament is bright indeed.

For 2025, 8 elite teams were welcomed, carefully selected for their excellence in sportsmanship, rich history in rugby, and recognition as like-minded institutions dedicated to nurturing young talent:

  • FOBISIA (Singapore)
  • Weihai Youth (China)
  • King George V School (Hong Kong)
  • Renaissance College (Hong Kong)
  • Tanglin Trust School (Singapore)
  • Kellett School (Hong Kong)
  • South Island School (Hong Kong)
  • German Swiss International School (Hong Kong)

This tournament followed the same format as the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens - all teams are allocated to a pool, and each team played 3 pool games to determine the pool placings. The top 2 teams then progressed to the Cup/Plate Semi-final and the 3rd and 4th placed teams progressing to the Bowl/Shield Semi-final. This allowed participants to experience a real-world tournament format and each pool had a good mix of home grown and international talent.

Hood was very pleased with the launch of the competition, reflecting: "I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the teams who travelled to participate in this year's Cathay Youth 7s Invitational rugby tournament. The quality of rugby displayed was exceptional, showcasing the talent and spirit of our young athletes. The Youth Sports Ground venue served as a fantastic backdrop, enhancing the excitement of the event.

It was thrilling to see teams not only competing fiercely but also sharing the experience of watching and being inspired by the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, which added an extra layer of excitement and inspiration. Planning is already underway for next year’s event we can't wait to welcome the teams back and invite new teams!"

Congratulations to our 2025 winners:

  • Shield: KGV
  • Bowl: GSIS
  • Plate: FOBISIA
  • Cup Final: Kellett

A big thank you to our players, match officials, organisers and supporters. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2026.
