HSBC x HKCR Women in Sport Innovation Challenge

The WXV Challenger Series brings together six of the world's leading emerging women's rugby nations - Fiji, Hong Kong China, the Netherlands, Samoa, Spain and Brazil - in a centrally hosted tournament at Kai Tak Sports Park. The competition will be played across three triple-header match days on 13, 19 and 26 September, showcasing high-quality international rugby and reinforcing Hong Kong's position as a host of major global sporting events.

Complementing the on-field action, Hong Kong China Rugby will host a Women in Rugby Summit on 19 September, bringing together athletes, administrators, coaches, partners and industry leaders to explore the future of the women's game.

As part of the summit, HKCR are launching a community merchandise design competition in collaboration with HSBC that invites local creatives to develop an innovative product designed specifically to support female athletes: addressing a practical need, improving performance and wellbeing, or celebrating the women's game through thoughtful design.

The Brief

The ask is simple: Send through a proposal for a product with a cover letter and a few accompanying details. A specialist judging panel will meet to decide on the top four designs, and the items will be presented at the Women in Rugby Summit on September 19 for the audience to vote for their favourite. Here’s the best bit – with HSBC’s generous support, the winning item will be produced and sold at the 2027 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens*

Submission Requirements

Submissions are welcome in a variety of formats, including presentations, video pitches, digital renders, illustrations, sketches. Each entry must be accompanied by a short written statement (or cover letter) outlining the concept and inspiration behind the design. This should clearly address the following questions:

  • Who is this product designed for?
  • What challenge or need does it address for female athletes?
  • How does it improve the experience, performance or participation of women in sport?
  • What story, value or aspect of women's sport does it celebrate?
  • How has inclusivity, accessibility and sustainability been considered in the design?

Entrants are encouraged to focus on practical, innovative solutions that reflect the lived experiences of women in sport. The strongest submissions will combine creativity with functionality, demonstrating how thoughtful design can make participation in sport more inclusive, enjoyable and empowering.

The target price point for the proposed item should be no more than HK$299 - keeping it accessible to the wider community.

Each product must clearly show the HSBC logo – you can add it in or leave a space for it on your design.

Submissions are due by 08 September 2027.
