2025年世界欖球滙豐七人欖球挑戰者系列賽

Hong Kong China Men's and Women's Sevens teams remain in Cape Town, South Africa, for Leg 2 of the HSBC Sevens Challenger 2025. The action continues on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 March, just six days after the opening leg. After the first leg our men are 9th place in the standings with our women in 10th place.

Following this leg, the top 8 men’s and women’s teams in the standings will advance to Leg 3 in Krakow, Poland (11-12 April). This stage will determine the four teams qualifying for the HSBC SVNS Playoff in Los Angeles (3-4 May), where a place in the HSBC SVNS Series 2026 is on the line.

Following last weekend’s first leg, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger 2025 Leg 2 returns to the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town this Friday and Saturday (7-8 March). All 24 sides are still in with a chance to secure a top-8 spot overall and in doing so qualify for the Leg 3 in Krakow in April.

Hong Kong China’s Men’s and Women’s 7s teams had a tough start to the first leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger in Cape Town, South Africa. The men lost both pool games – falling narrowly to Madagascar (19-21) and Canada (12-21), while the women lost a close contest to Czechia (19-26) and South Africa (0-36).

This meant that both teams dropped into the 9th-12th place bracket for Day 2, but both rebounded strongly from there to keep their hopes in the competition alive. The men defeated Georgia (29-0) in the 9th Place Semi Final and narrowly edging Tonga (21-19) in the 9th Place Final to secure what might prove a crucial 9th place finish. The women enjoyed an impressive 29-17 win over Samoa in the 9th Place Semi Final, but were edged out by Belgium (12-19) in the 9th Place Final, finishing 10th overall.

Both teams will stay in Cape Town and shift their focus to Leg 2 on 7-8 March.

Hong Kong China Men’s and Women’s 7s stars have headed to Cape Town ahead of World Rugby’s HSBC Sevens Challenger Legs 1 & 2. Travelling squads have been confirmed below – with 14 men and 13 women making the trip. A maximum of 12 players can be used in each leg.

Paul John, Head Coach of the Hong Kong China 7s Programme, said of the timing of the schedule of the series, “I am excited about the fact that we have longer preparation time going into March 2025 in Cape Town as we will restart at the beginning of January".

He said of the challenge at hand, after the men just missed out on a top four placement last season (ending up 5th on the log) and a series in which the women finished 9th overall, “It's going to be tough, but last year in the final two tournaments I thought we did well, the men and women. We know we are capable of challenging there, and the target is to qualify with the aim to get into the top 8 to reach the third leg in Poland.”
