ACADEMY AND TALENT PATHWAYS

ACADEMY AND TALENT PATHWAYS
Hong Kong China Rugby's academy and talent pathways are spearheaded by the Hysan HKCR Academy, delivered in collaboration with Hysan Development Company Limited. Our programmes identify and develop talented Hong Kong-based players, providing them with the best opportunities to excel in rugby.

The Hysan HKCR Academy is made up of the best youth players within Hong Kong’s rugby structure, with club and school coaches nominating players for academy trial sessions. More information on our pathway programme, as well as training and lifestyle sessions is shown below.

PATHWAY PROGRAMME

The Talent ID Academy was launched in February 2024 as a brand new programme. It aims to discover players within the Hong Kong School Sports Federation, A-Grade competitions and grow them into future senior representative players. Coaching sessions are delivered bilingually in Chinese and English.

The HKSI Academy focuses on 7s rugby and is supported by the Hong Kong Sports Institute, with players given the opportunity to train alongside the full-time representative teams.

A key event in our progression pathway is the annual New Year’s Day Tournament. Held at Hong Kong Football Club, this has been a major date on the local rugby calendar for more than five decades and sees the best U16 and U18 players take on players returning from overseas. TRAINING

Hysan HKCR Academy players are immersed in different environments, including training camps, tournaments and sessions with senior squads. A co-ordinated approach involving the family unit, club, school and HKCR performance staff is undertaken to ensure players’ training schedules are correctly managed.

LIFESTYLE

Throughout the year, Hysan HKCR Academy players rub shoulders with industry experts as they learn the importance of developing the lifestyle traits of elite athletes. Areas of focus include: planning for success, education and career, performance behaviours, lifestyle and resilience, nutrition, recovery for performance and individual warm-up.

The integration and implementation of these areas, alongside regular on-pitch training and strength and conditioning work, often sees players progress from the academy setup into senior teams.
